Here is a link to the first draft completed by the TBS Bylaws Taskforce. Please read it carefully and come to the forum on Tuesday prepared to discuss. Also see the previous posts with information about the professional facilitator brought in to assist with the forum and the list of potential member rights. The members of the taskforce have hashed through these rights at length and can answer (hopefully!) all questions about how they work.

An online forum for The Berkeley School's community members to share ideas and ask questions about the drafting of new school Bylaws. Our framing question: What structures should the TBS bylaws include to best support a strong, sustainable, and successful school able to fulfill its mission for the next 25 years, and beyond?
Two things on sec. 11.04:
ReplyDelete1. typo: Should be "national orgin," not "national original," though I would never want us to discriminate against originals either :);
2. I would also add transgendered and transsexuals to the protected categories.
One comment on Sec 3.01 Parents Association.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Bylaws should reference two public meetings jointly convened by the Board of Trustees and the Parents Association, to be co-chaired by the Board President and the Parents Association Chair, rather than, as currently drafted "two meetings with the members of the Parents Association" so that it is clear that these are neither Board Meetings or PA meetings, but instead, deliberative attempts to encourage cross-body collaboration. I also think it's best to clarify the convener (both bodies). Hope this helps.
Both are great comments and suggestions - thank you! We will address these in our next re-working of the draft.
ReplyDeleteHaving attended the March 1 Forum, I now have the following question. If there is no membership, and the Board retains the right to amend Bylaws without Community input, is it possible for the Board to eliminate the PA without community input? I know the current draft references a PA, but I wonder if it would be possible (not that any Board necessarily would) to eliminate the PA in the future. If so, how do we ensure that the PA is part of the school's "charter" as it were, as is the Board. Hmmm.
